🔐 LAWSUIT CLAIMS WHATSAPP IS NOT AS PRIVATE AS PROMISED
An international group of plaintiffs has sued Meta Platforms, claiming the company has misled users about the privacy and security of WhatsApp messages.
🔒 END-TO-END ENCRYPTION UNDER FIRE
Meta has long promoted WhatsApp’s “end-to-end encryption” as a core feature. This type of encryption is supposed to ensure that only the sender and the recipient can read messages — not WhatsApp, and not Meta.
By default, WhatsApp tells users that “only people in this chat can read, listen to, or share” their messages.
⚖️ PLAINTIFFS SAY META’S CLAIMS ARE FALSE
In a lawsuit filed Friday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, the plaintiffs argue that Meta’s privacy promises are misleading.
They allege that Meta and WhatsApp store, analyze, and can access nearly all user communications that are supposedly private.
🌍 GLOBAL USERS ALLEGEDLY DECEIVED
The lawsuit accuses Meta and its leadership of defrauding billions of WhatsApp users worldwide.
The plaintiffs come from Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, and South Africa, highlighting the global scale of the claims.
🕵️ WHISTLEBLOWERS MENTIONED, BUT NOT NAMED
According to the complaint, whistleblowers helped expose these practices. However, the lawsuit does not identify who they are or provide detailed explanations
🏢 META STRONGLY DENIES THE ALLEGATIONS
Meta, which acquired WhatsApp in 2014, dismissed the lawsuit as “frivolous.” A company spokesperson said Meta plans to seek sanctions against the plaintiffs’ lawyers.
🗣️ META: ‘THE CLAIMS ARE ABSURD
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone stated that claims WhatsApp messages are not encrypted are “categorically false and absurd.”
He emphasized that WhatsApp has used end-to-end encryption based on the Signal protocol for over a decade, calling the lawsuit “a work of fiction.”
📑 CLASS-ACTION STATUS REQUESTED
The plaintiffs’ legal team is asking the court to approve the case as a class-action lawsuit.
Several attorneys involved did not respond to media requests, while one lawyer declined to comment.
